Dias, Bertone, Lajolo, Lombardi... Appointment by appointment, Benedict XVI is changing the face of the Church’s central governance. At the center is the pope himself, and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
Goodbye Sepe and Sodano, et al.
Benedict XVI’s initial plans did not include making the announcement as early as he did, with an official statement last June 22. But the resistance he encountered within the curia convinced him to nip the opposition in the bud.
As opposed to Cardinal O'Malley, who appoints dissidents who oppose doctrine to distribute the temporal goods of Christ's Church. If Pope Benedict appointed Bryan Hehir as his right-hand man and Jack Connors to oversee doctrinal formation, if he brought in Voice of the Sexual Infidels to teach what makes genital touching safe, who, after two years of such appointments, would be befuddled about his agenda?
Perhaps we can all finally breath a sigh of relief that the Vatican do it's job. We'll push the papers documenting apostacy, heresy and liturgical terrorism up the ranks and they will discipline their children. I love Pope John Paul II - but he should have changed the babysitters a decade ago when it was clear the lack of discipline was causing the annialation of our religion in Europe and the United States.
It is no surprise that in the last change of the papacy, the two head honchos of diplomacy and of the curia – cardinals Sodano and Achille Silvestrini – were the ones most staunchly opposed to the election of Ratzinger, just as they later tried to block the appointment of Bertone.
