Here's a petition from the Republican Party that I would encourage you to fill out and distribute widely to your prayer groups, email lists, etc:
Last Thursday, all ten Senate Republicans on the Judiciary Committee unanimously voted to protect our values by approving the Marriage Protection Amendment. Unfortunately, all eight Democrats on the Committee-- including Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer and Dick Durbin--voted against protecting marriage as between one man and one woman. Democrat Senator Russ Feingold even stormed out of the hearing in protest when it appeared the Amendment was going to pass.
This Judiciary Committee approval comes two days after Georgia Superior Court Judge Constance C. Russell single-handedly invalidated the Georgia Marriage Protection Amendment, which was passed by 76% of Georgians at the ballot box. If anyone could have doubted in the past that the social engineers of the activist judiciary movement want to remake our nation in their preferred image, they cannot doubt it any longer.
President Bush correctly recognized the problem of judicial activism and its threat to traditional marriage by announcing his support in 2004 for the Marriage Protection Amendment. This amendment passed by the Judiciary Committee is very simple and will thwart the efforts of activist judges to remake the centuries-old definition of marriage:
"Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that Marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman."
This common sense measure is something that a vast majority of Americans agree with. Unfortunately, leftist groups and their Democratic allies in Congress are doing everything they can to stop this measure from passing. We need you to stand with President Bush and the Republican Party's effort to get this critical amendment passed.
The Republican National Committee is announcing an online petition to support President Bush and Congressional Republicans in their effort to protect marriage. This exciting new initiative, www.catholicsformarriage.com, is an effort of the RNC Catholic Outreach to build grassroots support for this critical amendment, which will come to a full vote in the Senate in early June.
